Legendary Star Wars and James Bond actor passes away

The galaxy far, far away has dimmed a little with the passing of Michael Culver, a distinguished British actor whose name became etched in the annals of cinematic history, particularly for his role in the iconic 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.

Culver, who portrayed Captain Needa, the unfortunate Imperial officer, met his demise in one of the franchise's most memorable scenes at the hands of Darth Vader. However, his legacy extends far beyond the realms of science fiction, encompassing a career spanning over five decades of stage, screen and political activism.

Born in 1938 in Hempstead, North London, to esteemed parents within the theatre industry, Culver was destined for a life under the spotlight. His father, Roland Culver, was a notable West End stage actor, while his mother, Daphne Rye, served as a casting director in London-based theatre. Following in their footsteps, Culver honed his craft at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, laying the foundation for a prolific acting career.

Culver's journey in the performing arts began in the late 1950s, with appearances on Broadway in Shakespearean classics such as King Henry V, Hamlet, and Twelfth Night. His talent soon graced the West End stage in 1962, marking the start of a distinguished theatrical career. Transitioning to the small screen, Culver made his onscreen debut in 1961, captivating audiences with his versatile performances in British television series and movies.

However, it was Culver's portrayal of Captain Needa in The Empire Strikes Back that solidified his status as a cultural icon. Despite his character's brief appearance, Culver left an indelible mark on audiences worldwide, immortalised in one of cinema's most unforgettable moments. His confrontation with Vader, culminating in a chilling demise, remains etched in the memories of countless fans, a testament to Culver's ability to captivate audiences with his presence.

Beyond his intergalactic exploits, Culver's talents graced a multitude of productions, including notable roles in Sherlock Holmes, A Passage to India, Secret Army, and even appearing in two James Bond movies – From Russia With Love and Thunderball – in uncredited roles. His versatility and dedication to his craft earned him admiration and respect from peers and audiences alike. Yet, Culver's contributions extended beyond the realms of entertainment; in the early 2000s, he shifted his focus to political activism, leveraging his platform to advocate for causes close to his heart.

Despite bidding farewell to the limelight, Culver's legacy endures through the countless lives he touched and the memories he forged on stage and screen.

An extended message on the Alliance Agents Facebook page, who represented Culver, read as follows:

"We are very sad to confirm the passing of our friend and client Michael Culver. A career spanning over 50 years with notable roles in Sherlock Holmes, A Passage to India, Secret Army and of course one of the most memorable death scenes in the Star Wars franchise. Michael largely gave up acting in the early 2000's to concentrate his efforts into his political activism. It's been an honor to have represented Michael for for the last decade and to have taken him to some of the best Star Wars events in the UK and Europe. A real highlight was taking Michael to Celebration in Chicago in 2019. He was lost for words when he saw his queue line with nearly 200 people waiting to see him. We worked with Michael just 3 weeks ago at his last home signing with our friends at Elite Signatures. Michel died on Tuesday 27th February at the age of 85."

"We miss him."

His passing leaves a void in the hearts of fans and colleagues, a reminder of the fleeting nature of life's curtain call. As we reflect on his remarkable journey, let us celebrate the life and legacy of Michael Culver, an actor whose talents transcended galaxies and whose spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.

In his memory, let us heed the timeless words of Captain Needa himself: "We shall double our efforts."

Rest in peace, Michael Culver. The force will always be with you.

Images: IMDB / Wookiepedia

Matildas captain Sam Kerr to face criminal trial

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has found herself at the centre of legal proceedings in London, as she pled not guilty to charges stemming from an alleged incident involving a police officer earlier this year.

Kerr, aged 30, appeared before Kingston Crown Court via videolink to contest accusations of using insulting, threatening or abusive language towards a police officer in Twickenham on January 30.

During the hearing, Kerr confirmed her identity and entered a "not guilty" plea to the charge, which was later confirmed by the Metropolitan Police. The specifics of the charge were outlined in a police charge sheet, citing Kerr for a racially aggravated offence under Section 4A of the Public Order Act 1986. The incident allegedly occurred during police intervention related to a complaint involving a taxi fare.

The trial, slated to commence in February 2025, is expected to span four days, during which two police officers will provide evidence. Meanwhile, Football Australia (FA) has issued a statement acknowledging the legal proceedings involving Kerr, asserting their commitment to support all players both on and off the field. However, due to the ongoing legal nature of the situation, further comments were withheld.

“Football Australia is aware of the legal proceedings involving Sam Kerr in the United Kingdom,” the statement read. “As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to provide further comment at this time. Our focus remains on supporting all our players, both on and off the field. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide support as appropriate.”

The announcement comes after Kerr's unfortunate sidelining from both club and international duties. Suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during Chelsea's warm-weather training camp in Morocco, Kerr faces a prolonged period of rehabilitation, ruling her out of action for the foreseeable future. Her absence from the Matildas' lineup is particularly sorely felt, with preparations for the Paris Olympics underway.

Despite the setback, Football Australia has not officially ruled Kerr out of contention for the Olympics. However, the typical recovery timeline for ACL injuries suggests a lengthy rehabilitation process, casting doubts on Kerr's participation in the upcoming tournament scheduled to begin on July 26.

Images: Getty Images

One of Sydney's most iconic properties, known as the Boomerang in Elizabeth Bay, has sold for $80 million.

The mansion is featured in the second instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, with the 2000 movie starring Tom Cruise being set and filmed in Sydney.

It was the first house to officially sell for above $1 million in 1978, before setting another record in 2002 when it fetched $20.7 million.

Now, multiple sources have confirmed it has been snapped up by a purchaser, originally from Asia, for four times what it last sold for.

The property has long been rated as one of Sydney’s Top 50 homes, and has been in the name of Katrina Fox, the daughter of Melbourne-based billionaire trucking magnate Lindsay Fox, since 2005.

The impressive home was put up for sale by Ray White in 2017 with hopes of selling for $60 million and then again with Brad Pillinger of Pillinger for $80 million in 2021 — the last agent to have it listed.

Pillinger couldn’t be contacted ahead of publication, but other sources have confirmed the property has sold for the $80m asking price, while speculation from other sources that the result was $105 million have been dismissed.

Boomerang sits on 4233 square metres of waterfront land, and features 25 rooms including a private cinema modelled on the State Theatre.

Image credits: realestate.com.au / Paramount Pictures

The Yarra City Council has been accused of pandering to those who vandalised a statue of Captain Cook in the days before Australia Day.

In the early hours of the morning on January 25th, a statue of the British colonist was sawn off at the ankles, while "The colony will fall" was spray-painted on the stone column.

Now, the Victorian city council will vote on whether to remove the statue for good, with one councillor claiming that replacing it would be a "waste of money".

However, a spokesperson for local residents said "giving in" to vandals would only encourage such destructive behaviour.

"If you're going to let vandals and criminals win, then you might as well give up altogether," Adam Promnitz, founder of the Yarra Residents Collective, told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

While Mr Promnitz admitted there were changing conversations around Australia Day in the inner Melbourne are,a he said this was the wrong way to have a discussion about removing the 110-year-old statue.

"This isn't the right way to do things," he said.

"You don't just get your own way by being destructive and anti-social and causing criminal damage."

"How can it be a good outcome for any body when it is basically a green light for vandals and criminals everywhere that we'll let you get away with what you want and you'll get what you want if you behave like this?"

Councillor Stephen Jolly said the majority of the council didn't share this view, telling the Herald Sun that replacing the statue would come at a cost that would better spent elsewhere in the community.

"Even people who love Captain Cook, who love Australia Day, will see that repairing a statue that costs thousands to fix isn't the most important thing to spend money on," Cr Jolly said.

"Residents want better bin services, more childcare services, cheaper swimming pools."

"All of these things are a better way of spending the money [than] on a statue that we know is absolutely certain is going to get ripped down again."

Captain Cook memorial vandalised ahead of January 26th

A memorial honouring Captain Cook in Catani Gardens, St Kilda has been vandalised ahead of Australia Day.

The statue of the British colonialist was cleanly sawn off from its stone base, which was also defaced with red graffiti and the chilling message: “The colony will fall”.

The memorial is believed to have been cut down around 3:30 am on Thursday, after members of the public alerted police.

“Several people were seen loitering in the area around the time of the incident,” police said.

Liberal MP Angus Taylor called the incident an “egregious act of vandalism" and said that it is one of the acts that "everyone should condemn.”

“Captain Cook was a man of the enlightenment. Why would they do this to I think a great human being,” he said on Today.

Port Phillip councillor Marcus Pearl described the incident as “disheartening” and called for the vandal to be held accountable for their actions.

“This is not a solitary act of mischief,” he said.

“It’s a repeated pattern of disrespect, especially evident around Australia Day for the past six years. Such acts blatantly disregard our community’s hard-fought principles of debate and democratic expression.”

The Captain Cook statue has been a target of multiple vandalism attempts, with vandals covering it in bright coloured paint, both in 2018 and 2022.

The Port Phillip councillor has urged people not to let this incident “fuel division” but instead drive “constructive, inclusive conversations."

“Our community’s strength lies in its ability to engage in respectful and open discussions,” he said.

Images: Today

"I saw that!": Tom Cruise reacts to Shirvo's 100m Olympic sprint

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, known for his association with A-list celebrities – and of course for his energetic, high-speed running in almost every film he's ever made – found himself captivated by Sunrise host Matt Shirvington's Olympic Games history.

Appearing on the Channel 7 breakfast show on Monday morning, Cruise was greeted by enthusiastic fans outside the Sydney studio who chanted his name and displayed banners.

However, it was a particular video showcasing Shirvo's performance in the 100-metre sprint at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games that truly caught Tom's attention.

"Tom, I have to be honest with you, as a kid growing up, I was a sprinter and went to the Olympic Games," began Matt during the segment.

"Did you? Wow, what year were you?" an intrigued Tom inquired.

Matt went on to reveal that he had competed in the 100-metre sprint at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Tom, clearly impressed, responded, "I saw you run in that Olympics. I saw that!"

As Tom gazed at the screen, he witnessed Matt, donning yellow and green attire, sprinting patriotically in the competition, juxtaposed with footage of the actor's own running scenes in his action movies.

"Look at that. You're a great runner. I'm a good runner," remarked Tom.

He then went on to explain that while he often runs in his films, he doesn't receive much assistance with training.

"I've been an athlete my whole life, participating in gymnastics and sprinting. I was like that little kid who would get a new pair of sneakers and then joyfully sprint, splashing through puddles.

"I haven't had extensive training, you know, but throughout the years, I've received some coaching and worked with different coaches as I grew up."

Tom continued, "You know what I do? I observe people, study them, and then try different things on my own.

"I'm the kind of person who watches someone, imitates them, and reads about other people's training. I've trained with different Olympians, constantly studying."

At this point, Matt chimed in, saying, "If you ever need a coach, let me know."

Amidst giggles, Nat Barr interjected, "We'll arrange a training session for you guys."

Tom went on to reveal that earlier that morning, he had engaged in sprints around his hotel room in Sydney, as he always makes an effort to stay fit.

"I've trained my whole life. You never take a break," he emphasised.

Images: Sunrise

“He just makes you proud”: AFL star's stunning Anzac Day speech

Darcy Moore, captain of Collingwood Football Club, has been praised across the board for the words he delivered in the wake of his team’s Anzac Day win against Essendon.

The Magpies had a lot to celebrate after their comeback win in front of a record-breaking 95,179 person crowd, but it was Moore’s post-game speech that is fixed in the mind of supporters, and anyone else who had had the honour of hearing what he had to say.

Moore was accepting the Anzac Day trophy before he gave his speech, and opened with a round of thanks for the thousands of fans - Collingwood and Essendon alike - who had made the trip to be with them on such a momentous day.

“First of all, I want to give a massive thank you to the 95,000 fans who are here, [a] record-breaking crowd,” he said. “No matter whether you wear the black and white stripes or the red sash, this game is about so much more than four points. So you turning up today and showing your support means a lot and we’re incredibly proud to play our part in this game.

“To Essendon, both Andrew [McGrath] and the team - as well as the broader club - thank you so much for making this event what it is.

“It means a lot to us that we can come together with your football club and commemorate the sacrifice of not just the Anzacs, but all servicemen and women who served Australia all around the world. So thank you to the Essendon Football Club.

“I want to thank and mention all men and women who are serving our country’s interests, both at home and abroad, in war and in peacekeeping operations. It means a lot to me and the team and the whole club that we can commemorate your service and your sacrifice today by doing what we do. So thank you for your service.

“To the veterans - there are over 600,000 veterans in this country who have returned from service - we also extend our thanks to you for your sacrifice and we hope that again, doing what we do today, somehow honours your legacy and what you’ve done for our country. Thank you to those 600,000 veterans as well.

“And then finally, to the families of those serving and those veterans. Too often, your stories go untold and on behalf of the Collingwood footy club, we just want to acknowledge the pain of war that runs through so many families across this country.

“It’s a real honour for us to run out here and play our game in honour of you and your service. So to the families of those who have served, thank you so much for your service.”

The Fox Footy panellists covering the game were some of the first to declare their appreciation for Moore’s sentiments, and were in agreement that the Collingwood captain had displayed some exemplary character - on and off the pitch.

“In addition to being one of the best defenders in the game, he is a very thoughtful and eloquent young man. That speech was, frankly, incredible the way he spoke and thought about so many people. It was something we’ll remember for a long time,” Sarah Jones, Fox Footy host, said.

“One of the best speeches I’ve ever heard on this day,” declared triple Coleman medallist Jason Dunstall.

“He made it all about the occasion and the sacrifice that has been made for us, well before us,” he went on to tell Fox Footy. “I thought that was brilliant.

“The words that he chose summed it up perfectly.”

And in the words of former AFL player David King, “he just makes you proud of our code when you hear a young man speak like that. Full credit, Darcy Moore.”

Images: Getty

“I thought you needed a morale boost”: Tom Gleeson’s rough review for The Project

Tom Gleeson has built a name for himself with his particular brand of comedy - sarcastic and dry, it’s a rare sight to behold when a sincere moment breaks through.

But that’s exactly what happened when the stand-up comedian and host of Taskmaster Australia stopped by The Project for a chat, surprising everyone when he seized an opportunity to sing his praises for the show’s new line-up.

“It's no surprise that he [Tom] finds it very weird to be nice,” The Project’s official Twitter account wrote when sharing a clip of his segment, “and he tried it on us.”

“I like making fun of comedians, that’s always a treat. But I can be nice as well,” Tom began, “but it’s off-putting. Would you like to see me be nice?”

The panel were eager to accept the unexpected offer, with Tom then informing them, “it’s weird, I’m loving the new Project. It’s great! I love it.”

When one remarked that it “still sounded mean”, Tom agreed that it didn’t sound right, and decided the next best thing was to compliment them all.

“What’s not to like about this show?” he asked. “We’ve got Liz, you know, a legend of Australian sports. Sarah Harris who’s a natural on camera, I’ve always loved you since I saw you on Studio 10. We’ve got Waleed, an intellectual with - you know - political opinions that are hard to pin down. We’ve got Sam who’s the best comedian of his generation - I’ve seen his act, it’s amazing.”

This time, the panel believed him, gushing over the nice words to a round of applause from the live studio audience.

Tom again admitted that it was weird for him, and when he was asked if it was bad for his reputation to say such things, he said, “well, to be honest, I only said it ‘cause I’ve seen your ratings and I thought you needed a morale boost.”

Thankfully, the hosts - and the audience - saw the funny side, bursting into laughter while Tom declared that it felt better to be “back to normal.”

.@NonStopTom holds two of the meanest positions on TV, Hard Quizmaster and Taskmaster, so it's no surprise that he finds it very weird to be nice… and he tried it on us.#TheProjectTV pic.twitter.com/5DL5FCj9vQ

— The Project (@theprojecttv) March 15, 2023

However, the new ‘normal’ for The Project drives Tom’s joke a little too close to home. Over the course of a year, the talk show’s broadcast audience numbers have seen a sizeable drop - almost 100,000 down.

While shows across multiple Australian networks have been hit with a viewership slump, The Project’s coincides with the departure of hosts Carrie Bickmore, Peter Helliar, and Lisa Wilkinson.

It was only in 2023 that the show locked in the new line-up of Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, Georgie Tunny, Michael Hing, Sam Taunton, and Hamish MacDonald.

A panel that Tom Gleeson, at least, is a fan of.

Images: Channel 10

Sorry I couldn’t make it,” joked another.

“Easy to see why he skipped out on the Oscars,” one said. “He knows where the real power lies.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by David Walliams HQ (@dwalliams)

Meanwhile, actress and TV personality Denise Welch took a slightly different approach to showcasing the party, opting instead to post a clip of a joke for mature audiences she’d shared with the party, writing that it was “such an honour to be asked by Shakira to say a few words at Sir Michael Caines’ 90th birthday!!! He loves a dirty joke and so does @tomcruise it appears!!!!”

Her fans loved it, with one quipping “Tom Cruise skipping the Oscars to watch Denise perform stand up was not on my 2023 bingo card.”

Denise liked the comment so much she later tweeted a headline that quoted it, calling it her “favourite headline ever.”

“No way is that Tom Cruise & Michael Caine.... just fainted. I can't imagine being at the same table as Hollywood Royalty,” another admitted on the original post, starstruck.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Denise Welch (@denise_welch)

In both posts, it appears that Cruise was seated right next to Caine for the celebration, with many voicing their surprise that the two were friends.

The pair have never technically appeared together in a movie, but both actors did have parts in the 2002 film Austin Powers in Goldmember. "We’re all f***ed if that happens": 60 Minutes' stunning f-bombshell

60 Minutes reporter Tom Steinfort spoke for Australians all across the nation when he swore at Treasurer Jim Chalmers in an interview on interest rates.

The exchange transpired as homeowners brace for a 10th consecutive rate rise, with the move expected to produce the highest interest rates Australians have seen in the past decade.

“Do you see similarities between now and what happened in the early ‘90s?” Steinfort asked the treasurer, referencing a difficult period of recession for Australia.

“There’s absolutely no chance that interest rates will get to the level that they were at in the early 1990s. I wanna make that clear,” Chalmers responded.

And while the treasurer had wasted no time in giving his answer, it wasn’t enough to stop Steinfort from scoffing, “yeah, well, we’re all f***ed if that happens.”

In January 1990, interest rates peaked - or hit rock bottom - at a record high of 17.5 per cent.

And now, the RBA is set to deliver more bad news - passing on another 0.25 per cent interest rate rise - with homeowners already feeling their wallet strings tightening when faced with the disparity between house prices and annual wages.

Australia’s inflation rate of 7.8 per cent marks the highest level since the early 1990s and is over twice that of the RBA’s 2-3 per cent inflation target - one they adopted in 1993. - the RBA took on its inflation target in 1993.

Experts fear that further interest rate hikes will see Australia face its first recession since 1991, a concern that Steinfort clearly shares.

Elsewhere in the interview, Steinfort wanted to know if Chalmers believed Australians had seen the worst of the inflation crisis, asking, “do you think we’ve hit the inflation peak?”

“That’s our expectation, yeah,” Chalmers said. “We think that’s most likely, uh, that inflation peaked at Christmas time and has started to moderate. But we won’t know until we get that next set of data.”

“You think we might be through the worst of it?” Steinfort pressed.

“Well, I think inflation is starting to come off,” Chalmers responded, before adding that despite his optimism, Australians shouldn’t expect for things to get easier overnight, “but even as it moderates we can’t be complacent about it, because it’s still going to be a challenge in ‘23, just like it was in ‘22.”

“You paint a picture that we’ve turned a bit of a corner and that there are better times ahead, but the people we’re speaking to - I mean, even when I look at my home mortgage bill - we’re not feeling it,” a sceptical Steinfort pointed out.

To which a smiling Chalmers answered, “yeah, I understand, and I think that certainly the prime minister understands, and that the government understands, that people are under real pressure now.

“We’re doing what we can to deal with it within the constraints of a responsible budget.”

Federal treasurer Jim Chalmers believes we’ve already seen the worst of Australia’s inflation problem. “From future Captain Seb”: Little boy blows away Jetstar crew with kind gesture

An aviation-obsessed boy’s act of kindness has resulted in him experiencing the “best day of his life.”

Little Seb, 11, was travelling from Brisbane to Melbourne with his family for a holiday when he gave the Jetstar crew a homemade thank you card.

The card wrote, “From future Captain Seb,” including a drawing of a plane.

The message was relayed to the pilot, Captain Hadrian Zerbe, who found it so sweet that he invited Seb into the cockpit for a chat as other passengers left the aircraft.

Captain Zerbe was so touched by Seb’s love for aviation that he then invited the 11-year-old to come back and visit the Jetstar hangar.

“He said it’s the best day of his life so far,” Seb’s mum, Emma, told news.com.au.

“Definitely,” Seb confirmed.

Seb is a big fan of plane spotting and playing flight simulator games but said he had never been so close to a real plane.

When asked about the coolest part of the experience, Seb replied, “When I walked around the plane close up, it was just so big. Bigger than I expected. All the engines were massive,”

Seb was not the only one left in awe.

Captain Zerbe was blown away by how much knowledge the young boy had of the Airbus A320.

“I’ve certainly never met an 11-year-old who knows so much about aviation and hopefully he’ll be sitting in the flight deck as a pilot some day soon,” the captain said.

Emma said planes consume most of her son’s thoughts; even before he could talk, he was overjoyed whenever he heard a plane fly above.

“If I find something I tend to research it for the rest of the night before I go to bed,” Seb said regarding his aviation research, which he takes very seriously.

“He stops mid-play if he hears something,” Emma said.

“Every story or picture has always been a plane. At school, it’s always planes that come home. He doesn’t deviate much from that.”

Seb has plans to get his recreational pilot licence when he turns 16.

Why why WHYYYY Tom Jones' biggest hit is ‘cancelled’

Choirs have been informed that they are no longer allowed to perform Welsh singer Tom Jones’ classic “Delilah” during international rugby matches at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

The announcement, made on Wednesday, came after allegations of misogyny, sexism, racism, and homophobia within the Welsh Rugby Union. Prior to banning the song, claims of a toxic culture within the WRU’s governing body were made public during a TV documentary, and chief executive Steve Phillips issued his resignation.

Previously in 2015, the WRU had removed “Delilah” from its Test match playlists and half-time entertainment, but now guest choirs have been asked not to perform it.

“‘Delilah’ will not feature on the playlist for choirs for rugby internationals at Principality Stadium,” a spokesperson for the stadium confirmed.

“Guest choirs have also more recently been requested not to feature the song during their pre-match performances and throughout games,” he continued, “the WRU condemns domestic violence of any kind.

"We have previously sought advice from subject matter experts on the issue of censoring the song and we are respectfully aware that it is problematic and upsetting to some supporters because of its subject matter."

The lyrics of concern, written in the 1960s, reference a woman’s murder at the hands of her jealous partner.

“I crossed the street to her house and she opened the door. She stood there laughing,” the song goes, “I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more.”

The decision to ban the song has been met with mixed response, with many unsure that it was the right step towards tackling the WRU’s issues - or if it was even a step at all.

“All the things they need to do,” tweeted WRU wing Louis Rees-Zammit, in what is believed to be a comment on the situation, “and they do that first…”

All the things they need to do and they do that first….😶

— Louis Rees-Zammit ⚡️ (@LouisReesZammit) February 1, 2023

“Wrongheaded,” was what Welsh Conservative shadow sport minister Tom Giffard said of the decision. “One that amounts to simple virtue signalling, designed to ease the pressure the WRU are currently under. Calls to ban the song span at least the last decade, yet the WRU have chosen now to act.”

He went on to state that people would rather see “institutional change” within the WRU, with better working practices and a refined complaint process.

But, as he put it, “instead they are choosing to ban a much loved Tom Jones song. This action will solve nothing."

Images: Getty
